Out with the old & in with the new. We hear this adage in January of every year, but the sentiment seems especially important in 2021. Let's take these words to heart and celebrate the new year by cleaning out your closet. Follow these easy steps for a non-stressful way to organize your messiest, most dreaded closet.
Declutter and Donate
Sort through your clothes to determine what stays and what goes. A good rule of thumb is getting rid of any article of clothing not worn within the past year. Recycle clothes in good condition by donating them to your local community.
Empty and Clean
Completely empty your closet. Once empty, clean every nook and cranny. It is important to start with a blank canvas.
Visualize and Design
Step back and imagine what your ideal closet looks like. Visualize which types of clothes fit best in each space. It can also be helpful to brainstorm design ideas online.
Sort and Organize
Sort the clothes you have decided to keep into categories and organize them in a way that makes sense to you. Suggestions include keeping like items with like and/or grouping colors together. For example, you may want to group all your pants together and then organize from lightest to darkest.
Baskets and Storage Bins
Maximize the storage area in your closet with decorative baskets and storage bins. Not only do they make the space look awesome, but they also streamline functionality. Use every inch you possibly can in your organized closet!
Fold and Stack
Fold any thick items—such as denim and sweaters—and stack neatly. The key to organized stacking is folding every item the same way so the items neatly line up when placed on top of one another.
Roll and Stand
Roll your lighter clothes and stand on end in any drawers or baskets you may have. That way you can easily see exactly what you have when you peer into the container.
Place your most used clothes at eye level—so they are easy to locate. Store items used less frequently in harder to access spots.
Maximize the Vertical
Remember to use that vertical space! Utilize empty wall space for hanging jewelry, belts, scarves and other accessories. Hooks and hanging racks can help maximize organization.
